Community Housing of Maine (CHOM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that develops, owns, and maintains quality, affordable, service-enriched housing for people with low incomes and special needs. 

Since its foundation in 1993, CHOM has developed 58 supportive housing sites in 30 communities spanning seven counties, creating over 260 units of low-income, special needs housing.  We have provided stable homes to hundreds of disadvantaged people in Maine.

CHOM seeks to advocate for people with special needs, and collaborate on their behalf to produce and maintain community-based supportive housing that fosters pride, stability, and wellness.  CHOM partners with service providers to make sure the people we house receive consistent, supportive services for successful independent living.  CHOM teams with property management companies to ensure that all homes are maintained to rigorous quality standards.

With an experienced, highly-professional staff, CHOM is able to develop complex projects from large tax-credit multi-unit developments, to smaller, customized homes that meet the needs of populations served.  Most of our properties are in community settings close to services and public transportation.  CHOM works closely with municipal officials, planners, architects, service providers, and community members to thoughtfully design or improve buildings that function efficiently and blend seamlessly into neighborhoods.  With the confidence and support of funding institutions including Maine State Housing Authority, the Genesis Community Loan Fund, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, cities such as Portland and Bangor, banks, and private lending institutions, CHOM consistently delivers excellence in new and carefully renovated housing that communicates dignity and respect to individuals served.

Community Housing of Maine is a 501(c)(3) corporation organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes with the following mission:

  • To acquire, develop, own, and maintain quality housing which is affordable for people with low- to moderate-incomes, including people who are homeless and/or have special needs; and

  • To foster and support additional housing opportunities for people with low- to moderate-incomes, people who are homeless, and people with special needs, through public education and policy development.
