Since it’s inception in 1993 Community Housing of Maine (CHOM) has been one of the most dynamic and active low income housing developers in Maine. By 1997 Maine State Housing Authority had named CHOM as the state's outstanding special needs housing developer. Over the last 7 years, CHOM has produced over 180 units of low-income, quality affordable housing. Traditionally, our activities have focused on providing new housing units for citizens with the lowest incomes and with special needs that require on-site social services to enhance quality of life and ensure stability. CHOM’s group homes, apartments, and assisted living facilities have been reserved for high-need, vulnerable populations: People with mental illness and/or a developmental disability, families who are homeless due to domestic violence, children in foster care, and refugee families. In recent years, Maine's economic conditions coupled with market demand for real estate has created a large population of "rent-overburdened" working families. These are families who contribute to Maine’s labor force and pay more than 50% of their income for rent. CHOM now also adds to its portfolio high-quality, affordable apartments for Maine's workforce populations. |
