Board Staff History Map

Community Housing of Maine has grown to become the largest developer and owner of supportive housing in the state.   Our organization primarily creates housing for a variety of vulnerable populations, and more recently began to meet the growing need for affordable workforce housing.  Each of our unique initiatives is a wonderful story of a collective group of caring people pulling together insight, creativity, and resources to meet the complex needs of a particular population in a distinctive setting.  We partner with over 20 service providers across much of Maine for individualized, client-centered, community-based housing that gives people with special needs a foundation because they are in stable housing enriched with support.

Our housing makes everyone proud – it is of high quality, and is constantly updated to meet the evolving needs of our consumers and service providers.   Clients have a strong sense of ownership – we want them to – this is their housing; this is their home.  We on the front lines have the pleasure of hearing the direct compliments: “This housing has changed my life, opened up opportunities, and given me a chance to make my life better.  Thank you for giving me a place to make my life work out.  I don’t know where I would have been without it.”

It is a complex task to put all the pieces together from the formation of lasting partnerships to the intricacies of development to the management of the housing and the upkeep of all of the relationships that make this balance work.

We stand up and fight for critical policy initiatives and legislation that will positively effect homeless and special needs populations, as we fight against policies that would undermine.  Some of this work is proactive and behind the scenes, and other times it is a more public battle for social justice and equality where change encounters resistance.  Community Housing of Maine has been and will continue to be on the forefront of supportive housing development, challenging and overcoming obstacles along the way, and breaking a path for others to follow.
